Wildlife and highlights

Tsavo West National Park is located in southeastern Kenya between Nairobi and Mombasa and is part of the vast Tsavo Conservation Area. Established in 1948, the park is famous for its spectacular landscapes that include volcanic hills, rugged terrain, acacia woodlands, riverine vegetation, and open grasslands.

One of the park's most iconic attractions is the Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water emerges from underground lava rocks, creating pools inhabited by hippos, crocodiles, and various fish species. Visitors can observe aquatic life through an underwater viewing chamber.

The park is also home to the historic Shetani Lava Flow, formed by volcanic eruptions hundreds of years ago. The black lava landscape provides a striking contrast to the surrounding vegetation and offers excellent photography opportunities.

Other notable attractions include the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, established to protect endangered black rhinos, and the scenic Chaimu Crater, Poacher's Lookout, and Roaring Rocks viewpoints that provide panoramic views across the park.

Tsavo West supports a rich variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and numerous antelope species. The park is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 600 recorded bird species.

The combination of exceptional wildlife viewing, unique geological formations, diverse habitats, and stunning landscapes makes Tsavo West National Park one of Kenya’s premier safari destinations.
