Wildlife and highlights

Marsabit National Park and Reserve is located in Marsabit County in northern Kenya, approximately 560 kilometers north of Nairobi. Established in 1949, the protected area encompasses the forested slopes of Mount Marsabit and surrounding savannah landscapes, creating a vital ecological refuge in Kenya’s arid north.

The park is characterized by dense montane forests, volcanic craters, underground springs, crater lakes, and open grasslands. One of its most famous attractions is Lake Paradise, a picturesque crater lake that attracts wildlife and numerous bird species throughout the year.

Marsabit gained international recognition through the conservation of its unique elephant populations, including the legendary giant-tusked elephants known as the "Kings of Marsabit." The park remains an important habitat for elephants, buffaloes, leopards, hyenas, and various antelope species.

The mountain forests provide a cool climate and support wildlife rarely associated with northern Kenya. Visitors may encounter forest-dwelling animals alongside species adapted to the surrounding dry environments.

Marsabit is also culturally significant, serving as a homeland for several indigenous communities including the Borana, Rendille, Gabra, and Samburu peoples. Visitors can combine wildlife experiences with cultural interactions and exploration of northern Kenya’s distinctive landscapes.

With its volcanic scenery, biodiversity, crater lakes, and unique position within Kenya’s northern frontier, Marsabit National Park and Reserve offers one of the country's most distinctive safari experiences.
